GUIDE

Do you need a photographer for a family event or party?

For some events a photographer is the best money you spend. For others, you pay for two hours of someone standing in your living room and still miss the toast because it happened at hour three. Here is how to decide, what to ask, and what to put in the hands of your guests.

Between a photographer and nothing?Let guests cover the candid moments, and keep a photographer for the portraits. See how ReelKept works.

What photographers actually charge

Rates vary a lot by region and experience, so treat any number as an example. One published price list from a family and event photographer, checked in October 2026, lists birthday party sessions at $200 per hour with a minimum number of edited images, events at $200 an hour, and short mini sessions at $85 for about 20 to 30 minutes at selected locations and times. Another photographer's list will differ. The only way to know your price is to get two or three quotes in your area.

When you compare quotes, ask about travel fees, how many edited photos you receive, how long delivery takes, and whether you can print and share the images.

When a photographer is worth it

When guests can cover it

For a casual birthday, a holiday dinner or a backyard party, the shots you will treasure are candid: the cake, a toast, a child's face, a grandparent laughing. Guests are already holding cameras, they are everywhere in the room, and they will catch angles one photographer cannot. The weakness is that the photos stay scattered, which is a collecting problem, not a camera problem.

A middle path many families choose

  1. Hire a photographer for a short window, such as an hour for the family portraits.
  2. Put out a QR code so guests share what they capture for the rest of the party.
  3. Tell the photographer you are collecting guest photos, so they can focus on what only they can do.

Many families find an hour of professional portraits plus guest candids covers more than a longer booking would, for less.

Where ReelKept fits

ReelKept by Lumi is not a photographer. It collects what your guests film and photograph into one finished film and the best photos from the day, so it works beside a photographer, or instead of one for events where candid coverage is what you want.

Questions people ask

How long should I book a photographer for a party?

For a child's birthday, an hour or two around the cake and gifts is common. For a holiday dinner, a shorter session of family portraits before the meal is a common choice. Ask the photographer what they suggest for your plan.

Can guests really replace a photographer?

For candid moments, often yes. For posed portraits, prints and an album, a professional is hard to replace. Many families do a short professional session and let guests cover the rest.

What should I ask a photographer before booking?

Ask the rate, minimum time, number of edited images, delivery date, travel fee, usage rights and how you receive the files.

Are the prices on this page what I will pay?

No. They are one photographer's published examples. Prices differ by area and change over time, so get quotes near you.
