Homeschool School Supplies List

No 40-item back-to-school list here. Homeschool supply needs are genuinely smaller โ€” especially once a curriculum app is doing the lesson content. Here's what's actually worth buying.

Why the List Is So Much Shorter

A traditional back-to-school list is built for a classroom of 25+ kids sharing supplies and a teacher planning lessons from scratch. At home, with one to a few kids and a curriculum that's already built, most of that list simply doesn't apply. Here's what's actually worth having.

What You Actually Need

โœ๏ธ
Basic writing supplies โ€” pencils, pens, an eraser, a pencil sharpener. Nothing fancy required.
๐Ÿ““
Paper and notebooks โ€” for handwriting practice, math scratch work, and journaling. A few spiral notebooks cover most grade levels.
๐Ÿ“
A few math tools โ€” a ruler, and for older kids, a basic calculator. Manipulatives (counters, blocks) are nice-to-have for younger kids but not required.
๐Ÿ–Š๏ธ
Highlighters and folders โ€” helpful for older kids organizing their own work, optional for younger ones.
๐Ÿ“ฑ
A tablet, laptop, or Chromebook โ€” if you're using a curriculum app, this replaces textbooks, workbooks, and most consumable worksheets outright.
๐Ÿ–จ๏ธ
Access to a printer (optional) โ€” handy for printing report cards or the occasional worksheet, but not a requirement to get started.

What You Don't Need to Buy

๐Ÿ“˜
A Textbook Per Subject
A curriculum app covers this. No need to buy a separate Math book, Science book, and Reading book for each grade.
๐Ÿ“ฆ
A Full Classroom Supply Kit
Glue sticks by the dozen, 24-packs of crayons, tissues for the whole class โ€” those lists are sized for a shared classroom, not your kitchen table.
๐ŸŽ’
A New Backpack
Nice if your kid wants one, but nothing about homeschooling requires carrying supplies anywhere.
๐Ÿ“
Pre-Printed Lesson Plans
If your curriculum app already has the lessons written, you don't need a separate lesson-planning book or subscription.

Optional, If You Like Them

Some families like to supplement with physical workbooks for extra handwriting or math-facts practice, or want a whiteboard for demonstrating concepts. Neither is necessary โ€” they're just personal preference add-ons, not requirements.

Where Lumi Fits In

๐Ÿ“š
Replaces the textbooks and workbooks โ€” full Kโ€“8 curriculum across Math, ELA, Science, Social Studies, and bonus subjects, with static, pre-written lessons.
๐Ÿ–๏ธ
No separate answer keys or grading โ€” kids tap or type answers directly in the app, and it's scored automatically.
๐Ÿ–จ๏ธ
Printable report cards when you want them โ€” you're not buying a separate record-keeping system.
๐Ÿ‘จโ€๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐Ÿ‘งโ€๐Ÿ‘ฆ
Up to 8 kids, one account โ€” no per-child curriculum purchase needed.
