The Four Things Every Homeschool Needs
You don't need a classroom or a curriculum closet. You need these four things sorted out, and everything else falls into place around them.
๐
1. Curriculum
Pick something that covers your core subjects for the grade level(s) you're teaching, and that you can actually stick with. The best curriculum is the one that gets used.
๐๏ธ
2. A Schedule
Not necessarily 8-to-3. Decide how many days a week, roughly how long per subject, and when you'll do it. Write it down somewhere everyone can see it.
๐ช
3. A Workspace
A corner of the kitchen table works. The point is a consistent, low-distraction spot your kids associate with "school time."
๐
4. Record-Keeping
Most states want some form of attendance or progress documentation. Decide up front how you'll track it, so you're not reconstructing it from memory in the spring.
Before the First Day: The Checklist
โCheck your state's homeschool requirements โ notice of intent, required subjects, attendance days/hours, and any assessment or portfolio rules. These vary a lot by state.
โChoose curriculum for each subject โ at minimum Math, Reading/ELA, Science, and Social Studies. Decide if you're teaching it yourself, using a program, or a mix.
โSet a weekly rhythm โ which days, what time, how long per subject. Loose is fine, but write it down.
โSet up a workspace โ a table, basic supplies (pencils, paper, a few workbooks if you like them), and a spot to charge a tablet or laptop if you're using an app.
โPick a record-keeping method โ a notebook, a spreadsheet, or an app that logs it automatically. Decide before day one, not in March when a form is due.
โPlan for more than one kid, if that applies โ figure out what can be done together (read-alouds, science, field trips) versus what needs to be per-grade-level.
โBuild in breathing room โ a slower first week, some flexibility for sick days or off days. Homeschool doesn't need to run like a school calendar to be legitimate.
