Some families grade everything strictly, some use pass/fail for younger kids and switch to letter grades in the transcript years, and some don't formally grade at all until high school. What matters most is picking an approach and staying consistent so your records make sense later, especially if you'll need a transcript.
Most families who do grade use something close to the traditional public-school scale, since it's what colleges and transcript reviewers recognize:
