A simple, ready-to-use plan for turning "a few families who found each other" into a co-op that actually runs. No experience organizing one required.
First things first
Before the first meetup: pick a regular day and time (weekly beats "whenever works" โ the research is clear that a fixed rhythm is what actually makes a co-op stick), agree on a home base (a rotating living room, library meeting room, or park), and send everyone this page.
An 8-week starting rhythm
You don't need a full curriculum plan to start โ just a shape. Adjust freely once you find what your group likes.
Week 1
Meet & set expectations
Week 2
Show & tell โ finished work
Week 3
Group project kickoff
Week 4
Skill swap (a parent teaches)
Week 5
Field trip or outdoor day
Week 6
Project check-in
Week 7
Free play / social
Week 8
Project showcase + reset
Roles that make it self-running
Spread these across 3โ4 families so no one parent is carrying the whole thing. Rotate every 8 weeks.
๐ Host
Confirms the space each week and has a backup plan for bad weather.
๐ฃ Communicator
Sends the weekly reminder and keeps a simple group contact list.
๐ Activity Lead
Brings that week's project, game, or topic โ doesn't have to be fancy.
๐งโ๐คโ๐ง Welcomer
Greets any new family and gets them up to speed before week one.
First-meeting agenda (about 45 minutes)
Introductions โ one parent, one kid detail each. Keep it light.
Set the rhythm โ lock in day, time, and location for the next 4 weeks.
Hand out roles โ use the four above, or fewer if the group is small.
Ground rules โ arrival/pickup expectations, what happens if plans change, how to handle a kid conflict.
Pick week 2's activity โ so nobody's scrambling the morning of.
๐ฌ Conversation starters for the first meetup
What's one thing your kid is really into right now?
What does a "good school day" look like at your house?
What's one thing you're hoping this group gives your family?
This kit is a free starting point, not a Lumi-run program โ your group sets its own rules, plans, and pace. Print it, adjust it, make it yours.
