That last step is the one worth lingering on. Wheat, corn, and nearly everything else in a grocery store is the product of thousands of years of deliberate human selection. Before agriculture, humans followed food. Farming inverted that: it forced people to stay in one place for months waiting on a crop, and it produced something new โ a surplus, meaning more food than the growers needed immediately.
Surplus is arguably the most consequential idea in human history. If a village can feed more people than it takes to grow the food, some people can do something else entirely: make pots, build, keep records, treat the sick, govern. Specialization becomes possible. Calendars followed for the same reason. Planting too early or too late destroys a year's food, so tracking the solar year precisely became a survival skill. Many ancient monuments align to solstices because knowing the date mattered enormously when you couldn't simply look it up.

Chart three of these side by side and kids reliably notice the same pattern surfacing independently: food, gathering, and gratitude. Cultures separated by oceans and centuries arrived at nearly identical responses to the same event. That's a genuine insight about human beings, not a list of holidays.
Pull five items from your kitchen and find the country or state of origin on each label. Locate them on a map and estimate the distance each traveled. Kids are typically stunned to find that a single dinner represents thousands of miles of transport.
It also opens a genuinely two-sided discussion rather than a lecture. Local food travels less, but a greenhouse-grown local tomato in January can consume more energy than one shipped from a warm climate. There isn't a clean answer, which makes it excellent practice at reasoning through a trade-off โ a skill in short supply.
Harvest teaches something curriculum rarely states outright: food is the result of labor, weather, timing, and enormous accumulated knowledge, and none of it is guaranteed. A kid who understands that a bad frost in the wrong week can erase a year of work has a more accurate picture of the world โ and, usually, a noticeably different attitude toward what's on their plate.
