Start Free →The most common misconception about seasons — held by a surprising number of adults — is that it gets colder because Earth moves farther from the sun. It doesn't. Earth is actually slightly closer to the sun in January than in July.
Seasons come from axial tilt. Earth spins on an axis tipped about 23.5 degrees. As it orbits, that tilt means one hemisphere leans toward the sun for part of the year and away for the rest. In autumn, your hemisphere is tilting away, so sunlight arrives at a shallower angle and spreads its energy across more ground. Spread-out energy heats less. Days also shorten, so there are fewer hours of heating and more hours of cooling.
A flashlight makes this obvious in about thirty seconds. Shine it straight down at a table and you get a small, bright, intense circle. Tilt it and the same light smears into a wide, dim oval. Same flashlight, same distance — only the angle changed. That's autumn.
Winter presents every animal with the same problem: less food, less warmth. There are essentially three answers, and it's worth having a kid sort animals into these buckets rather than memorizing a list.
Migration. Geese, monarchs, hummingbirds, and many songbirds travel to where food still exists — some monarchs cover over 2,000 miles.
Hibernation and dormancy. Ground squirrels drop their body temperature near freezing; bears enter a lighter state called torpor.
Deer grow thicker coats, foxes change fur density, squirrels cache food. No escape, no shutdown — just preparation.
Mostly day length, the same cue trees use. This is why migration timing stays fairly consistent even in an unusually warm autumn — the signal is astronomical, not meteorological. It's a good chance to point out that a reliable cue beats an accurate one: temperature is a better description of current conditions, but day length is far more predictable, so evolution favored it.
A gray squirrel practices scatter hoarding — instead of one big cache, it buries thousands of nuts in separate spots. It then relocates them using spatial memory and smell, though it never recovers all of them. The forgotten ones sprout. A meaningful share of oak forest exists because squirrels have imperfect memories, which makes the squirrel an accidental tree planter.
Squirrels also engage in deceptive caching: if a squirrel thinks it's being watched, it will sometimes perform a fake burial — digging, miming a deposit, covering an empty hole — while keeping the nut in its mouth. That's a real, observable behavior in a backyard, and it's a genuinely startling example of animal cognition.
Frost isn't frozen dew. Dew forms when water vapor condenses into liquid; frost forms by deposition, where water vapor turns directly into ice without becoming liquid first. That's why frost has feathery crystal structure rather than looking like frozen droplets.
Frost also explains a common backyard puzzle: why the lawn and car roof are white while the pavement isn't. Surfaces that radiate heat away quickly — grass blades, car roofs — can drop below freezing even when the official air temperature is a few degrees above it. Concrete stores daytime heat and releases it slowly, so it stays warmer. The thermometer reads 36°F and there's still frost, and nothing is wrong with the thermometer.
Autumn changes fast enough to be noticeable week to week, which is rare. Most natural processes are too slow for a kid to perceive or too fast to examine. Fall sits in the narrow band where a child can form a prediction on Monday and check it on Friday — the shortest honest version of the scientific method there is, running in your own yard, for free.
