8th Grade Spelling Words: the full year, free

These 240 words follow one pattern per week: academic and content words. Every list is built from the Science of Reading order, so spelling and reading reinforce each other. Print one week at a time, or on one sheet.

Want it to feel like a game? Spelling Quest in Lumi Academy says every word and sentence out loud, lets kids build words with letter tiles (no typing needed for young kids), and keeps missed words coming back until they stick.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many spelling words should a 8th grade student learn each week?

Lumi uses 8 pattern words plus 1–2 "heart words" per week for 8th grade. Short, pattern-based lists are easier to master than long random lists, and missed words come back the next week.

Are these spelling lists really free?

Yes. Every list and printable practice pack on this page is free to print and share for home, co-op and classroom use. No email or account is needed.

How do the printable practice packs work?

Each week prints as three pages: trace-and-write with the pattern rule, a fill-in-the-blank and ABC-order page, and a Boss Test page a grown-up reads aloud. Writing lines are 1/2 inch tall.

Can my child practice these words online?

Yes. Spelling Quest inside Lumi Academy reads each word and a sentence aloud, has your child build it with letter tiles, and moves them to the next week once they pass the Boss Test twice in a row.
